RSV is a serious and disruptive illness
Regardless of how you feel, how healthy you eat, or how active you are, the fact is: If you're aged 60 or older, you are at risk of getting RSV.
RSV symptoms can show up within 4 to 6 days after becoming infected and usually appear in stages. Symptoms can include:
- Runny nose
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Fever
- Wheezing
- Decrease in appetite
There are some symptoms that are more serious and require immediate medical attention, including:
- Difficulty breathing
- High fever
- Blue or gray lips or skin
- Chest pain
If you're aged 60 or older, the risk of RSV infection causing severe symptoms can be even higher—making it that much more important to protect yourself and your loved ones.
RSV risk for older adults
RSV is not worth the risk. As you age, so does your immune system. A weakened immune system could mean having a harder time fighting off infections like RSV, especially if you're aged 60 or older. For some people, RSV infection can lead to more serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. RSV can be especially risky for older adults with certain medical conditions, like:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD)Asthma
Congestive heart failure
(CHF)Advanced liver or kidney disease
Diabetes
CDC Recommended
To protect against RSV, the CDC recommends vaccinating all adults who are:- Aged 60 or older with increased risk of severe RSV disease
- Aged 75 years or older
